"Understanding diversity at the inaugural event of the South Asian Youth Camp”
A Group of 55youngsters from South Asian countries came together on the first of
February 2010 in the main hall of the Young Men`s Christian Association (YMCA) in
Pune to attend the inaugural event of the South Asian Youth Camp.
Diversity, democracy, gender, good governance and environment were topics discussed
by the youngsters at this camp. The kick off of the inaugural event was a play Youth4Change.
The play covered all the program topics in an artistic way. Afterwards the audience
was treated to a short film covering the all of the hard work, the volunteers and
stuff put into organizing the event.
The film and the play were the artistic expression gave away the creative and innovative
spirit of SAYC, after which the more official part of the day started. The lighting
of the traditional diyas (a candle) was lid to signify diminishing the spell of
darkness by spreading the light of knowledge. This was done by the honorable guest
Mayor Mohan Singh Rajpal, members of the advisory board; Mr. Farooque Shaikh, Mr.
Matthew Mattan and Ms. Vandana Raj as well as Ms. Nisha Agarwal, CEO, Oxfam India
and two participants of SAYC
