Climate Change

CYDA through its youth force has been engaged in addressing various social issues and concerns. The efforts to address environmental concerns through youth groups mobilized under the Youth4Change program began in 2004. A group of 20-30 youth were mobilized to work on the issue of garbage disposal in a community – Datawadi (slum area, Pune city). The effort mainly focused on creating awareness on the issue and what could be done at the level of the community to effectively address the issue of safe disposal of garbage. This was a yearlong programme in which there was a considerable change seen in the way the community disposed the Garbage

In 2005, the “Tekdi Bachao Andolan” was an inspiring program for the Youth4Change group. The group was engaged in creating public awareness on protecting the Western Ghats. As part of the program, the group ran a signature campaign and formed two human chains – one on the Tekdi, and the other on Law college road, Pune in which several people form all walks of life participated.

Later, all environment related groups/activities were brought together under ‘Pune Cares’ in 2006. ‘Pune Cares’ is a platform for environmental related activities carried out by a group of volunteers who have come together to work on environmental issues under CYDA. The ‘Pune Cares’ youth group has 12 members who have been working by mobilizing other youth on different environmental issues since 2006. It has been part of the river basin clean up drive which aimed at cleaning the plastic waste that is accumulated at the river banks, which pollutes the water, further causing various health problems.

Global warming is a situation, which is slowly but steadily killing the earth. Each one of us in some way or the other, through our actions is adding fuel to the fire. CYDA has always been working on issues concerning the environment. It is engaged in creating awareness on the issue of global warming. Since it is closely working with the youth, it is through this campaign that they are reaching out to the youth in colleges of Pune with socially relevant messages on issues of global warming, particularly focusing on how the youth, through individual action as responsible and responsive citizens, can contribute towards addressing the issue.
