Disaster Management

Encouraging young people to manage Natural calamities was one of the major focuses of CYDA. At various occasions, CYDA was active in mobilizing as well as motivating large number of young people for the same. However, CYDA was one of the organizations, which reached Nagapattinam during the Tsunami in December 2004. With the support of Pune Citizen’s Initiative (PCI), a collective of social action groups and concerned citizens of Pune came together to provide solidarity and support to the victims of natural disasters or social injustice and raise objections on issues concerning the quality of life in Pune City. Pune’s concerned citizens and social action groups came together under the aegis of Pune Citizens’ Initiative (PCI) to express the solidarity to the victims of the killer wave. With more than 15 organizations and individuals as its members, PCI is actively involved in the rehabilitation process after tsunami.

CYDA undertook a rehabilitation project in a tsunami-affected village of Tamil Nadu -Pushpavanam. After the initial relief work, CYDA has now committed itself to the rehabilitation of Pushpavanam for the next one year. For the next one-year, CYDA volunteers engaged themselves in the rebuilding of this village, in consultation with the local panchayat. CYDA took up tasks of restoration of livelihood resources of fishermen as well as of farmers. It is also functional in creating job opportunities for landless labourers and Dalit community. The damaged and momentarily uncultivable land is being treated under the supervision of AFARM’s agricultural experts. The damaged catamarans are being repaired. Zensar Foundation offers scholarships to young boys and girls.
